Disgusting. You are not the best....
shut up tatin your only embarrassing yourself, go back and read the article again if you still don't understand the context of what was said then may i suggest a few colouring books.
you are nothing but a novice and a kid in comparison of the greatests whom you have insulted by your thought and talks
Joe1206....Are you really saying Lewis was also joking when he made similar comments. Medication Joe, you need stronger medication!
What a load of crap from an obviously biased Lewis Hamilton Journo!!!! This isn't remotely what Jenson meant in the article! Read the article yourselves, and vow never to read this morons material again. Taken completely out of context, and meant to soften Lewis' genuine belief of his own comments! Disgusting Journalism!
If he became a champ what kind of jokes are we going to hear then? God of F1?
LOL reminds me of when various drivers were asked who they thought would win the championship (this was '94, I think) and Mika Hakkinnen brightly said "Me! Oh..." for the cameras.
Its well known Jenson has a great sense of humour and he really doent believe he is Senna incarnate. People actually take these statements at face value .. thats pretty funny & Im sure Jenson thinks so too.
He should focus more on his driving and winning the crown, not having a big head. That will bring him down
I hope it is tongue in cheek or else he will be made a laughing stock in the paddock!!
Jeez, if this were coming out of Hamilton's mouth, this spot would be innundated with people trying to rip him a new one for being pretentious. But when Jense says it? "Oh, he's having a joke, it's ok..." Weaksauce...
Quality.. I'd suggest to anyone read the article and not the title before posting and then for extra kicks scroll through all the comments on this story spot the muppets who didn't read the article and posted..
No doubt his comment will be taken out of context and blown out of all proportion, but those of us who know the man, knows he is having laugh. Great to see he still has a good sense of humor :)
Because the aero package on his raquet was not good enough!
Dear oh dear. Memo to anyone who deals with the media. Never, ever say anything jokey even if the journalist clearly writes "tongue in cheek". 90% of readers don't understand jokes, have no sense of humour and have never heard the word 'irony'. Remember Andy Murray and his "anyone but England" comment on the football? Complete repartee response to a joke about Scotland from Tim Henman in an interview they did together. Result? Sense of humour failure from 90% of English and Scots fuelling stupid "we hate Murray, we hate the English". You really have to wonder at the intelligence (lack of) of some readers.
If Button's so great why didn't he win Wimbledon this year?
I know he's having a joke.. I like Jenson. But what im saying is if Hamilton said this all you hater would be trying to make out he is arrogant and is not having a joke.
better to have it coming from your mouth than Hamiltons......urraurrraaaa Jenson ur the best!!!!
really really sad when everyone makes a big hoo ha out of what was clearly just a tongue in cheek response, I believe it's the standard race driver response to that question actually....come to think about it, he's not the best in the world.....I AM. LOL
Jense is having a laugh. It's a joke. He's not that self absorbed. Lewis on the other hand.......
See If this was Hamilton you haters would be picking every little sentence and quote from him and try to make him out to be arrogant. But just because its another driver its totally different your trying to pick every sentence and quote to defend him. If this was Hamilton saying he's the best their ever was, there would be millions of comments off you sad haters saying how arrogant and not a good driver he is. You are really sad tbh.
WOW... I didnt realise so many folk had a senseofhumourectomy! Its obviously a bit of fun. As far as F1 goes I think he's one of the most normal guys out there, I'd be happy to go for a pint with Jense, not sure how many others though!
Come on Jenson is not Lewis Hamilton he is just winding you up.
Personally i dont think JB is the best ever even though im a fan, schmui has won a hell of a lot more as so many others have.Without 1 world championship under your belt you cannot compare yourself to the likes of Senna and Sir Jackie.
The comment was tongue in cheek - JB is one of the most normal people on the grid in F1. Is he actually an average drive or any good though? Time will tell when there is levelling out of the advantage the Brawn car currently has. If he can win GPs and/or titles when it is more competitive and win coming from down the field due to overtaking on the track then he can be classed as a good/great driver. At the moment he's a work in progress.
muddwell, that will be all the button haters who are struggling to justify their claims that he is not a worthy championship leader, regardless of having the best car, he still has to drive it faster than anyone else in order to have won 6 races so far....get off his back, at least he talks to the media..eh Kimi?
Difference is....Jenson trully has tongue in cheek when making the claim. Lewis trully believes he is a "Legend of F1"! LMAO!!!!
I don't see it as arrogant. I think it's fun to see someone who had been relegated to the scrap heap get the last laugh.
Better yet put your Felipe in a kart, and teach him wet - weather, not pants - driving.
Read the tongue in cheek part you clowns. Anyone who takes this article literally is a douche.
Wow! Do you guys even read the stories? It was a joke. Poor journalism and even worse reading comprehension.
he is a good driver...but not the best! the little respect i had for him has vanished after reading this..i hope he learns how to be magnanimous in times of triumph..
Jokes are half meant even if its just out of context or not..How can Jense say he is the best when he didn't claim any WDC yet?He must be forgetting that its the car that gave him his glory. His driving skills? He even can't pass Nico at the last Brit GP when he's lapping a second quicker. But look at the skills of Alonso & LW. Banging and defending their positions like two pitbulls on the track. Even if Jense is not serious he should keep his mouth shut and wait for the crown.
One of the members of the string quartet Escala posted on their blog how sweet Jenson Button was when they met him at the Monaco GP. Escala is busy promoting their new album, so they don't have the time to follow F1, even if they had the inclination, which is rather doubtful. In fact, I'll wager that the girls in Escala won't read anything about F1 this summer except this Piers Morgan puff-piece. If Jenson Button wins the championship this year, the four beautiful girls in Escala will go to graves thinking they met the greatest race car driver of all time.
the article says the comment was tongue in cheek. anyone who calls him arrogant is clearly retarded.
wow! Jenson finds himself with the best car (so far) for this season and all so suddenly he's claiming he's the greatest ever. What a guy! He's allowed his new found success to get to his head. Never have i head Senna, Stewart, Schumacher, Fangio ever say such a thing. Enjoy it while it lasts Jenson cause by next year you won't step on a podium anymore. Can someone please put this fellow in his place? What a wind bag!
And we all thought that Max and Bernie both had big EGOS..this is serioius competition.
I read all that thinking Jenson was having secret fun of it. I don't think he was serious about a lot of things, but I trust him when he says he is the best. Every race driver think he could do better than the others, otherwise he would better stay at home and watch on TV. If a driver does not think the best of himself, who else would?
Eventhough,I am not liking what is happening this season,I mean the front is the back and the back is the front and I am not particularly a fan of button,I don't mind a racer coming out and jokingly saying that he is the best but not actually acting arrogantly and as if he is a level above the others like your man Lewis there. As for the question,I am not a fan of schumi either but until his record is broken,he is the best but i really wish Alonso breaks em all one day and possibly with schumi's own team.
What an IDIOT! Have you ever heard of a flash in the pan? Now its called a Jenson Button. Enjoy it while it lasts, I'm sure you deserve it. But shut your big British trap. That may earn you some respect if you do infact win the title. Remember, it isn't won yet you dope! Only a fool, ne idiot counts his chickens this early on.
@ Fluffy: hahahaha, thats the funniest comment ever: "lewis would never say anything so arrogant..." hahahaha hahahahaha hahahahahahahahaha hahahaha
You might rue those comments Jense, you are not that great just full of yourself
It appears that for many writers here, irony is a foreign country.
winnning or losing, i never cared much for what button had to say.
As Foghorn Leghorn used to say " It's a joke ,son. I keep pitching 'em and you keep missin' 'em"
Mmm...!!! wonder what the 'pensioner' his comrade is likely to come up with!
Jense...when you woke up from your dream...what happend??
Oh for goodness sake! READ THE ARTICLE! "With his tongue firmly in his cheek" - He was JOKING!!!
Answer to 'obiswift'. Michael Scumacher in the Benetton. Championships of 1994&1995.
For those people here whose first language is not English, I can appreciate the misunderstanding of this article. For those that claim to be fluent, and still choose to post nonsense, please use one of the many phrase search sites and look up "No doubt with his tongue firmly in his cheek. "
"I guess that when you won so easely since the begining of season,it can start to go to you head...A alonso(did at renault),or hamilton would blow him away. And people says that hamilton is arrogant...
Fluffy - if Lewis had said it, he'd have been serious.
I'm amazed by the muppets on here who take Jenson's 'comment' so seriously!!! That was a 'tongue in cheek' bit of British humour, nothing more! And as someone else has said, ALL F1 drivers think they are the best, they wouldn't be there otherwise!...Jenson just said it with a dash of comedy! If you don't get it, don't comment!!! Actually, the reaction is quite funny too! ROTFLMAO!!!!
I think Jenson was putting a light hearted comment to a magazine that targets men's egos. He's enjoying his trip, so let him have some fun. Why do racing drivers have to be serious all the time? :-)
Its a joke ...get over it.
It must be a terrible life having to be on guard 24/7 about everything that you say in case it is taken out of content. It's time everyone lightened it up just a little. Oh the life of the rich and famous.
Kennytime, Felipe only "shines" when the best drivers fail. When all the drivers are at the best, he isn't worthy of a Ferrari seat. Take last year for example. Raikkonen wasn't on the ball, Hamilton made many mistakes and Alonso was in a bad car. He still didn't win the championship. All three of those drivers are better than him, fair and square.
Not everyone understands the British sense of humour which is a shame as it's the best in the world. Just like Jenson;-)
cyrano, "Jenson's comment is so obviously a joke, typical of the man's light-hearted edge, any comments to the negative are made by immature yolts who don't judge well." you start with this, then go to slag off Hamilton in the exact same manner?, same as EVERY post i have ever seen of yours!, try looking in the mirror fool!
F14Life; I wouldn't think JB would worry to much about losing "fans" like you
Ego trippin'
Jenson has always been a good driver ... Now he's so lucky that he has the best car ... Put Felipe in it and let's see who's best ...
In any case he is better than te all mighty whining uk baby hammy. And he is more honest...
Funny, if Lewis had said that, there would be few comments defending him and saying he was taken out of context. But then Lewis would never say anything so arrogant and clearly untrue.
What a guy!!! and i thought Lewis was arrogant. It will be a long time before we see a Schumacher again. Its a shame, i thought that Button was a serius man. Jast another...Kimi and Massa would never talk like idiots!
Arrogant little git! Taken out of context or not. Sorry mate, you just lost a fan. idiot.
ordernary driver, good car. same situation as alonslow, kimi and hamilton. if you put, almost evry driver from the field, in ag superiur car they will winn. the test is can he winn in a ordernary car? no he have tryed for years now. no results i wonder if he ever heard about schummi? shummi won in a ford, that takes skills!
What is the matter with everyone? Anyone who believes a single word that Piers Morgan says or writes is a bigger idiot than Morgan himself.
Button's right, hes definetely the best in history, I mean, just looks at his results and statistics... they easily trump those of Schumacher and Senna, and co. And now, I'm going to go walk on water.
Let him enjoy his time, but he just gotta make sure he wins the championship. I f he doesn't win he will not only confirm that he is an underachiever, but also a choker.
First off, the rules have Jenson winning this year, yes he has talent, but "the best". Can someone die from laughing there ass off...Serously, does he not remember someone named Michael Schumacher, or Aryton Senna, hell I'd put Mika Hakkienen ahead of Button,
He's an F1 racing driver - of course he believes he's the best...... otherwise he wouldn't be lining up on the grid every 2 weeks.
Piers is a complete fool, and to believe anything that he writes is foolish indeed. It perhaps shows a misjudgment on Buttons part to even agree to talk to him in the first place
Can anyone tell me how many points did button score last year in bad poor and how many lewis has scored so far in also in this bad car?
CooperS - we have rarely had a brit in a good car. Lewis Hamilton - in his 1st rookie year challenged the championship down to the last grandprix. second year - Won it. We had Eddie Irvine, David Coultard who I am sorry to say were not good enough. Damon Hill who challenged for a few years against Michael Shumacher and did in fact win the championship. Now Jenson Button, Name any champion who did not Win with a good car under them.
haha, omg, the guy who chooses which photographs to use on this site has decided to give Alonso a break and pick on Button. Love the Button photo, very appropraite to the out of context quote. Nonetheless, i cant help but think that Button interprets his performance in the most pathetic season in the history of F1 as meaning he is the best ever. At the end of the day, all F1 drivers are good, even Piquet, (he just looks real bad next to Alonso), some drivers are just really really good, personally i dont think Button is up there with Alonso and Lewis, no doubt a lot of brits will strongly disagree with me, but hey, i dont really care if Button wins every single race for the rest of the season, he aint on Lewis's level, his been in F1 for too long for anyone not to see that. Lets just hope Mclaren are competeive next year and Alonso does go to Ferrari, cause we all know what F1 needs is a consistant Alonso vs Lewis show at the front of the grid, not the back.
Jenson's comment is so obviously a joke, typical of the man's light-hearted edge, any comments to the negative are made by immature yolts who don't judge well. Mr. Button has struggled with inept cars for years, and he knows well (as he says) what Hamilton is feeling. Hamilton should have struggled with lesser teams in the beginning, rather than being immediately flung into a top car. Now he'll learn what it is to be in the top flight, and how to be a mench of a champion. Meanwhile, he's the most unfit champion in the history of the sport, and Jenson has more quality as a person in his pinky finger than Lewis has in his whole team. When Hamilton emerges from his current mess, he'll be a real man, and a competent champion. Until then, shut the frig up and watch Jenson get the joy he's earned.
Actually I'm being unfair excluding Seb Vettel in my first post - he's another in the Jenson and Mark Webber camp. I especially liked his comment after he won at Monza last year. "Sebastien this must be the greatest moment of your life?" Answer "you obviously weren't there when I lost my viginity".
At least some people seem to be able to actually read an article and not just the headline and first paragraph, and then better still be able to recognise when Jenson is having a laugh. Jeez - those who thought he was being serious are presumably the same people who read the "off on F1" features on this site and then make comments branding the conclusions ridiculous and fanciful - hilarious. Anyway at least we have a championship leader with a personality and not a robot - Jenson and Webber come across as the only F1 drivers out there with something about them out of the car. On MB's gridwalks its refreshing to have Jenson happy to talk to Martin and better still have a bit of banter with him or DC rather than the likes of Massa, Kubica, Kimi, et al who just shake their heads when he's approaching them. Thankfully JB and MW are both getting it done in the car this season as well.
Cheeky or not, Button is only where he is because of this "silly season". We're only talking about Button because of the car, not because of any real competitive challenges from this season. I doubt many seriously consider Button to be "the best" driver on the grid...or even in the top 3 or 4.
I must agree 100% with BIKERBAZ. I've noticed that often in statements and interviews, and that includes Planet F-1, a single snippet is taken out of context and that becomes the glaring headline to the article. After reading the entire story you realize that you've been somewhat duped initially. This is the one part of Planet f-1 that I don't particularly care for.
As always the press are taking the comment out of context and I do wish the like of Piers Morgan would get a life instead of stirring up this kind of rubbish.
Jenson isnt the best, he is good now all thanks to Ross Brawn, but i have nothing against him
Out of context? perhaps, but I would like a Brit, any Brit, to win the championship before making these kind of remarks
If Button gets misreported and misconstrued it only serves him right for talking to Piers Morgan. Perhaps Morgan will come up with his speciality . . . . some fake photographs to "prove" his point!
Hell we have some clowns on this forum, ironic then that they can't recognise a joke when they see it
V-Master I cant see why you need to call Button an idiot and so far he's made less mistakes than Vittel....name calling what are you 6.
"...have had a remarkable turnaround in form this season." are there people out in the racing world who really believe that button on top and hamilton on bottom because of form??? f1 pilots are ~5% of the equation, though a weighted 5% in many eyes this reversal not about form which begs many a question about how we have turned some into heros. some people cannot imagine NOW what would have been the course for hamilton had he started in a back-end car. he would not be at the front and not the hero with the $30mil+ per. form? ridiculous. car? absolutely. of course, this applies to button who was not gifted the best car for many years and is now in the discussion because of the car. can't interview a car, yet.
Button has much more character than this. I do not believe that he wasn't joking when he said that. I have only one thing to say to all these reporters, GET A LIFE.
:D I love this driver! It's so good to know he is human, not just a robotic driver void of fun or humility. Also good to hear the comments about Lewis, even with jut a snippet of what was actually said, and even without knowing the context or intonnation, he sounds so sincere very much grounded on terra firma, rather than having his head in the clouds. Years of hard work suddenly paying off are being appreciated, not arrogantly expected. Big respect. As for Morgan, he is a publicist's dream. A few carefully chosen quotes and he can have the casual observer of F1 believing Jenson is everything his detractors say he is. I've never understood the need to belittle anyone in order to sell rags, especially as the man is riding his crest of greatness and selling stories could ride with him. I, for one, buy F1 Magazine when they feature an article about a driver I like, but not when it is being derogatory - what's the point of reading about your hero being slagged off? No sales to me in that instance.
Ask any racing driver "who is the best driver?" and the answer comes out as "Me". It's what you are supposed to say, it's the law.
PlanetF1 should change their name to ProvocateurF1 :)
Sarcasm never translates to print. Interviewers know this better than anyone yet publish it as fact, nailing subjects like this.
Once again the media takes a simple comment, twists the hell out of it to sensationalize it. Piers Morgan should be ashamed for making such a light hearted remark into something like this. When will Jenson and Lewis realise that these people are not their friends, they are pond life, and will do anyone a disservice to get a headline.
I think the comment has been taken out of context. I imagine Button was just joking, much like he likes to have a joke on the grid with Brundle and Coulthard. I highly doubt he actually thinks he's the best. Jenson has never been an idiot, nor has he been arrogant. I think he was just making a joke which has been totally misinterpreted.
IT'S CALLED HUMOUR!
Oh come on now, this is GQ magazine for God's sake! It was a bit of fun interview and has been taken way out of context. I'm sure there are many other drivers who would have said the same thing when asked the same question as a bit of a laugh (DC not least!). It's not like he went on blowing his own trumpet. It was a simple comment made in good jest, nothing more and nothing less!!!!!
LOL, bless him
I suspect his answer was meant as a joke, but it does seem that he's getting pretty cocky and his comments about Lewis are a little bit cheeky.
Button may have just done a Rafa Benitez and blown his chance at the title.
Here we go - Piers Morgan the biggest media 'player' in the industry playing the same old game of misquoting the famous to enrage the dumb public to sell his puny magazine. And see how many chumps fall for it and start hating button...
Lol, wins 6 races and he's the best! The Brawn must be a FANTASTIC car. Gives Barichello credibility, and if it allows an IDIOT like Mr Jenson to lead the championship, then the car must be out of this planet. Cmon Seb, embarrass this little twit, and chase him down like only the German's can!!!
Obviously another "in depth" interview by a reporter who really knows their stuff. The 'Guardian' interview with Bernie was worth the read. but G.Q. about Motor sport. Nah!
I'd say the same thing about me,he's just having a larf. Nobody takes Piers Morgan seriously, ask any driver they will say the same.
That's why I won't be buying GQ Magazine
"Belch,Yawn,Fart".Agghhhh.
button the greatest drivere i wish he shuts up and wins samething before he opens his mounth
