Dear oh dear. Memo to anyone who deals with the media. Never, ever say anything jokey even if the journalist clearly writes "tongue in cheek". 90% of readers don't understand jokes, have no sense of humour and have never heard the word 'irony'. Remember Andy Murray and his "anyone but England" comment on the football? Complete repartee response to a joke about Scotland from Tim Henman in an interview they did together. Result? Sense of humour failure from 90% of English and Scots fuelling stupid "we hate Murray, we hate the English". You really have to wonder at the intelligence (lack of) of some readers.

But just because its another driver its totally different your trying to pick every sentence and quote to defend him. If this was Hamilton saying he's the best their ever was, there would be millions of comments off you sad haters saying how arrogant and not a good driver he is. You are really sad tbh.

The comment was tongue in cheek - JB is one of the most normal people on the grid in F1. Is he actually an average drive or any good though? Time will tell when there is levelling out of the advantage the Brawn car currently has. If he can win GPs and/or titles when it is more competitive and win coming from down the field due to overtaking on the track then he can be classed as a good/great driver. At the moment he's a work in progress.

His driving skills? He even can't pass Nico at the last Brit GP when he's lapping a second quicker. But look at the skills of Alonso & LW. One of the members of the string quartet Escala posted on their blog how sweet Jenson Button was when they met him at the Monaco GP. Escala is busy promoting their new album, so they don't have the time to follow F1, even if they had the inclination, which is rather doubtful. In fact, I'll wager that the girls in Escala won't read anything about F1 this summer except this Piers Morgan puff-piece. If Jenson Button wins the championship this year, the four beautiful girls in Escala will go to graves thinking they met the greatest race car driver of all time.

I read all that thinking Jenson was having secret fun of it. I don't think he was serious about a lot of things, but I trust him when he says he is the best. Every race driver think he could do better than the others, otherwise he would better stay at home and watch on TV. If a driver does not think the best of himself, who else would?

Kennytime, Felipe only "shines" when the best drivers fail. When all the drivers are at the best, he isn't worthy of a Ferrari seat. Take last year for example. Raikkonen wasn't on the ball, Hamilton made many mistakes and Alonso was in a bad car. He still didn't win the championship. All three of those drivers are better than him, fair and square.

CooperS - we have rarely had a brit in a good car. Lewis Hamilton - in his 1st rookie year challenged the championship down to the last grandprix. second year - Won it. We had Eddie Irvine, David Coultard who I am sorry to say were not good enough. Damon Hill who challenged for a few years against Michael Shumacher and did in fact win the championship. Now Jenson Button, Name any champion who did not Win with a good car under them.

haha, omg, the guy who chooses which photographs to use on this site has decided to give Alonso a break and pick on Button. Love the Button photo, very appropraite to the out of context quote. Nonetheless, i cant help but think that Button interprets his performance in the most pathetic season in the history of F1 as meaning he is the best ever. At the end of the day, all F1 drivers are good, even Piquet, (he just looks real bad next to Alonso), some drivers are just really really good, personally i dont think Button is up there with Alonso and Lewis, no doubt a lot of brits will strongly disagree with me, but hey, i dont really care if Button wins every single race for the rest of the season, he aint on Lewis's level, his been in F1 for too long for anyone not to see that. Lets just hope Mclaren are competeive next year and Alonso does go to Ferrari, cause we all know what F1 needs is a consistant Alonso vs Lewis show at the front of the grid, not the back.

Jenson's comment is so obviously a joke, typical of the man's light-hearted edge, any comments to the negative are made by immature yolts who don't judge well. Mr. Button has struggled with inept cars for years, and he knows well (as he says) what Hamilton is feeling. Hamilton should have struggled with lesser teams in the beginning, rather than being immediately flung into a top car. Now he'll learn what it is to be in the top flight, and how to be a mench of a champion. Meanwhile, he's the most unfit champion in the history of the sport, and Jenson has more quality as a person in his pinky finger than Lewis has in his whole team. When Hamilton emerges from his current mess, he'll be a real man, and a competent champion. Until then, shut the frig up and watch Jenson get the joy he's earned.

Actually I'm being unfair excluding Seb Vettel in my first post - he's another in the Jenson and Mark Webber camp. I especially liked his comment after he won at Monza last year. Chylout

At least some people seem to be able to actually read an article and not just the headline and first paragraph, and then better still be able to recognise when Jenson is having a laugh. Jeez - those who thought he was being serious are presumably the same people who read the "off on F1" features on this site and then make comments branding the conclusions ridiculous and fanciful - hilarious. Anyway at least we have a championship leader with a personality and not a robot - Jenson and Webber come across as the only F1 drivers out there with something about them out of the car. On MB's gridwalks its refreshing to have Jenson happy to talk to Martin and better still have a bit of banter with him or DC rather than the likes of Massa, Kubica, Kimi, et al who just shake their heads when he's approaching them. Thankfully JB and MW are both getting it done in the car this season as well.

Cheeky or not, Button is only where he is because of this "silly season". We're only talking about Button because of the car, not because of any real competitive challenges from this season. I doubt many seriously consider Button to be "the best" driver on the grid...or even in the top 3 or 4.

I must agree 100% with BIKERBAZ. I've noticed that often in statements and interviews, and that includes Planet F-1, a single snippet is taken out of context and that becomes the glaring headline to the article. "...have had a remarkable turnaround in form this season." are there people out in the racing world who really believe that button on top and hamilton on bottom because of form??? f1 pilots are ~5% of the equation, though a weighted 5% in many eyes this reversal not about form which begs many a question about how we have turned some into heros. some people cannot imagine NOW what would have been the course for hamilton had he started in a back-end car. he would not be at the front and not the hero with the $30mil+ per. form? ridiculous. car? absolutely. of course, this applies to button who was not gifted the best car for many years and is now in the discussion because of the car. can't interview a car, yet.

:D I love this driver! It's so good to know he is human, not just a robotic driver void of fun or humility. Also good to hear the comments about Lewis, even with jut a snippet of what was actually said, and even without knowing the context or intonnation, he sounds so sincere very much grounded on terra firma, rather than having his head in the clouds. Years of hard work suddenly paying off are being appreciated, not arrogantly expected. Big respect. As for Morgan, he is a publicist's dream. A few carefully chosen quotes and he can have the casual observer of F1 believing Jenson is everything his detractors say he is. I've never understood the need to belittle anyone in order to sell rags, especially as the man is riding his crest of greatness and selling stories could ride with him. I, for one, buy F1 Magazine when they feature an article about a driver I like, but not when it is being derogatory - what's the point of reading about your hero being slagged off? No sales to me in that instance.

Ask any racing driver "who is the best driver?" and the answer comes out as "Me". It's what you are supposed to say, it's the law.

PlanetF1 should change their name to ProvocateurF1 :)

Sarcasm never translates to print. Interviewers know this better than anyone yet publish it as fact, nailing subjects like this.

Once again the media takes a simple comment, twists the hell out of it to sensationalize it. Piers Morgan should be ashamed for making such a light hearted remark into something like this. When will Jenson and Lewis realise that these people are not their friends, they are pond life, and will do anyone a disservice to get a headline.

I think the comment has been taken out of context. I imagine Button was just joking, much like he likes to have a joke on the grid with Brundle and Coulthard. I highly doubt he actually thinks he's the best. Jenson has never been an idiot, nor has he been arrogant. I think he was just making a joke which has been totally misinterpreted.

Oh come on now, this is GQ magazine for God's sake! It was a bit of fun interview and has been taken way out of context. I'm sure there are many other drivers who would have said the same thing when asked the same question as a bit of a laugh (DC not least!). It's not like he went on blowing his own trumpet. It was a simple comment made in good jest, nothing more and nothing less!!!!!

I suspect his answer was meant as a joke, but it does seem that he's getting pretty cocky and his comments about Lewis are a little bit cheeky.

Button may have just done a Rafa Benitez and blown his chance at the title.

Here we go - Piers Morgan the biggest media 'player' in the industry playing the same old game of misquoting the famous to enrage the dumb public to sell his puny magazine. And see how many chumps fall for it and start hating button...

Lol, wins 6 races and he's the best! The Brawn must be a FANTASTIC car. Gives Barichello credibility, and if it allows an IDIOT like Mr Jenson to lead the championship, then the car must be out of this planet. Cmon Seb, embarrass this little twit, and chase him down like only the German's can!!!

Obviously another "in depth" interview by a reporter who really knows their stuff. The 'Guardian' interview with Bernie was worth the read. but G.Q. about Motor sport. Nah!

I'd say the same thing about me,he's just having a larf. Nobody takes Piers Morgan seriously, ask any driver they will say the same.
