McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has echoed Lewis Hamilton's comments that there is no need to rush contract negotiations with the former World Champion.
While his team-mate Jenson Button signed a new multi-year contract with the team a few months ago, both McLaren and Hamilton have remained tight-lipped about extending his deal beyond 2012. Until now.
Hamilton revealed on Tuesday that he has already held initial talks with Whitmarsh, but says he is in no hurry to put pen to paper.
"I am in no rush. I don't think there is any real pressure about my commitment to the team so there is no rush to have to do anything. Just focus on the next stage," Hamilton said.
"Martin has spoken to me about re-signing already. I know it is there. At some stage, when we have time, we will sit down and discuss it. Again, the most important thing is to focus on the season ahead."
Whitmarsh also feels there is plenty of time left to sort out Hamilton's contract.
"We will see. Lewis and ourselves are in a really good place, and he is in a good place. He loves the team, we know him well, so we are not putting any timeframe on it," he told Autosport.
"We will see what happens in the course of the next year. There is plenty of time."
