'Hamilton will inspire Mercedes'

Bernie Ecclestone has praised Mercedes' decision to sign Lewis Hamilton, confident he has the ability to inspire the team to greatness.

Last month the 2008 World Champion announced that he would be leaving McLaren at the end of this season and heading to Mercedes.

The decision was questioned by many given the difference in winning pedigree between the two.

However, Ecclestone reckons if anyone can turn Mercedes into a winning outfit, Hamilton can.

"I think it's good for Mercedes," said the F1 supremo.

"If they are really going to get their act together they need someone like Lewis who is going to do a bit of inspiring for people that want to go and work there.

"Nobody wants to work for a team that doesn't look as if it is doing well, but now maybe they will.

"I think Lewis' name is a stamp of good housekeeping, which is what everyone expected of Michael."
