Vettel: Maybe I cut the kerb

Vettel: Maybe I cut the kerb

Sebastian Vettel says he has no idea what caused the puncture that put him out of Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The reigning World Champ suffered his first retirement since last year's Korean GP in Abu Dhabi when a puncture put him into a spin and out of the lead on the opening lap.

The German made his way back to the pits in an attempt to return to the race but it was quickly apparent that his RB7 had more damage than just a puncture and he retired for the first time this season.

Vettel and his team were seen going over data and examining the car, however, the 24-year-old has no idea what caused the puncture in the immediate aftermath of the race.

"At the exit of the first corner everything seemed fine but when I turned in I tried to catch the car but I couldn't do it anymore and I spun off," he told the BBC.

"On the way back I damaged the suspension so badly. I don't know what happened.

"We lost pressure all of a sudden out of the exit of Turn One. I don't why. There is nothing that I did differently to any of the others laps

"We need to find out why, maybe I cut the kerb at a funny angle."

Vettel, though, did put his time on the sidelines to good use as he spent the rest of the grand prix sitting on the pit wall instead of the standard response to a retirement of hiding in one's motorhome.

"It is tough, but I used the opportunity to learn a bit on the pit wall."
