Schumacher: An unfortunate end

Michael Schumacher has lamented the loss of a solid points-finish after being taken out of Sunday's Korean GP by Vitaly Petrov.

Schumacher started the grand prix 12th on the grid but was up inside the top ten by the end of the first lap.

The German continued to make progress and even moved ahead of Fernando Alonso after the first round of pit stops. But, moments later, his race came to a crashing conclusion.

With Alonso and Petrov fighting for position behind Schumacher, the Renault driver made a move to overtake Alonso, storming down the inside of the Ferrari.

However, Petrov was carrying to much speed and could not brake in time to avoid Schumacher who was turning into the corner ahead of their battle.

The Russian crashed into the side of Schumacher's Mercedes GP, breaking off the rear wing and putting the German out of the grand prix;

"Another unfortunate end to a race which could have been encouraging today," said Schumacher.

"It's a big pity as the car was again very good in race trim and I had already gained some positions. It would have been interesting to see what was possible, and I think we could certainly have taken some points.

"As for the incident, I didn't see Vitaly coming; I was just suddenly spun into a direction I had not intended to go, and then I saw my rear wing hanging off.

"It was unfortunate but these things happen when you fight hard - that's racing."

Petrov, who has been handed a five-grid slot penalty for the next race in India, has apologised to Schumacher.

"I apologise to Michael, it was my fault and not his," he said.

"I tried to focus on Alonso to gain and defend one position, then I tried to out-brake and was on the dirty side - even Fernando was on the outside and also missed the corner."
