Mark Webber may have been second to Sebastian Vettel for much of the Korean GP weekend but when it really matter in qualifying he came up with the goods.

The Red Bull racer secured his second pole position of this season but only his first out on track having previously inherited the grid slot in Monaco when Michael Schumacher was penalised.

This time, though, it was all Webber as the 36-year-old crossed the line at the Yeongam circuit with a 1:37.242, edging his team-mate by 0.074s.

"This is my first [pole] on track," said Webber.

"I'm happy to get the job done reasonably well. We did it when it counted and that's what it's all about. I'm happy to start on pole, but tomorrow is the main day."

As for Sunday's Korean Grand Prix, the Red Bull racer reckons he has reasons to be "optimistic" about his chances.

"I think off the back of Suzuka we improved the car a bit.

"You never get ahead of yourself, but we were optimistic after that, though we knew it wouldn't be a given.

"We have a handy car and the guys are working very, very hard, no question.

"That hard work is paying off but we'll keep focused on ourselves and keep pushing the lap times down."
