Kubica to race in WRC2

Robert Kubica will make his return to competitive racing later this month after it was confirmed he will race in the WRC2 category of the World Rally Championship.

The Pole, who was forced to quit F1 in 2011 after he partially severed his right hand and suffered arm and leg fractures during a horrific crash at a rally in Italy, will compete in the European Rally Championship in the Canary Islands on March 21-23 as part of his preparations.

He will take part in seven rounds of the WRC - with the first race in Portugal on April 11-14 - and will drive a Citroen DS3 RRC (Regional Rally Car), which has been specially modified.

The FIA has given Citroen permission to use a paddle-shift gearbox on the left side of the steering wheel, with its change of speed to match that of a conventional gearbox.

"I weighed up the different options before deciding this programme," said Kubica, who drove for BMW-Sauber and Renault during his F1 days.

"I kept in touch with Citroen and both sides were keen to continue working together.

"I'm really pleased now to be able to return to top-level racing.

"I can't wait to start, but I haven't set myself any specific target.

"I still have a lot to learn and to improve I will need to rack up the miles on the stages."
