Lotus technical director Nick Chester insists the team's twin-tusk approach to the tip of the nose is legal...
Following the launch of the Toro Rosso in Jerez last night, the midfield team revealed that they had considered the twin-tusk design but ruled it out as they felt it was not within the spirit of the regulations.
"The Lotus nose needs clarification, but it's a very clever idea," said STR tech director James Key.
"The question really is, is it within the spirit (of the regulations)? We'll see.
"It's really down to the FIA and Lotus to discuss that, obviously. If they run it, then it's passed the impact test, and they're happy.
"I don't think it's illegal, it's just whether it's in the spirit of the regs."
However, Chester has been quick to defend the design.
Asked if the FIA was 'relaxed about this solution', the Lotus man said: "Absolutely, as you know we have passed all the necessary crash tests and we are very confident that our design complies with all the FIA legal requirements - we have just taken an innovative direction, and one that's different to the other teams.
"Where there are so many variations in design, there is always bound to be a little talk, but we remain relaxed and focussed on our design and progression."
