Alguersuari signs up for Formula E

Jaime Alguersuari has joined the list of former F1 drivers putting their name down for the new Formula E Championship.

Alguersuari spent two and a half years with Toro Rosso before being dropped by the team at the end of the 2011 season.

The Spaniard had hoped to make a return, however, after years of trying is now seeking a drive in the new Formula E Championship.

"I'm very pleased to be joining the Formula E Drivers' Club," he said.

"I think Formula E provides a new concept in motorsport and will be a great challenge to the drivers, especially having to learn new tracks in just one day and to race in city-centres like London and Beijing."

Alguersuari joins a list of 24 drivers that includes several former F1 driver such as Robert Doornbos.

"I am really proud and happy to become part of the Formula E Drivers' Club," said the former Minardi F1 driver.

"I believe that Formula E cars are the future of motor racing and I look forward to racing again after a successful career in F1 and Champ/IndyCar.

"I'm positive that it will attract a lot of attention worldwide and sponsors will get to experience autosport on a new level."

The 24 drivers on the list will all experience the new fully-electric Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E car before the teams decide who to put in their car for the season.

The inaugural Formula E Championship kicks off in Beijing on 13 September 2014.
