Newey the latest to slam double points

Red Bull chief designer Adrian Newey is the latest figure in Formula One to criticise the double points rule.

According to Newey, awarding more points for a victory at one race is an 'artificial' concept akin to professional wrestling.

"It's a personal view, but I'm not a fan of it at all," Newey told Autosport.

"To me it just seems very artificial that third place [in Abu Dhabi] will now be worth more than first place at Monaco or another race.

"To me it just seems very artificial that third place [in Abu Dhabi] will now be worth more than first place at Monaco or another race.

"It's a shame that in the drive to try to keep the championship alive to the very last race you take this artificial route to it. [It] just seems to me to be cheapening the sport. It makes it just a little bit WWF to me."

Damon Hill is one of view from within the sport to back the double points rule publicly, but as a whole the reaction to the format change has been negative.

Last week, 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve spoke out against modern Formula One and its gimmicks, calling it a 'fake show'.

Newey, however, believes the success of the double points rule will depend on how interested in the Novermber 23 race in Abu Dhabi the viewing public is.

"I think for this year, no [the rule will not be scrapped]," he continued.

"Whether it gets changed for subsequent seasons or not is going to depend on public opinion post the end of the season.

"If, of course, viewing figures are much higher and people aren't turning off in protest then it will be deemed a success and will continue."
