Ferrari forced into 2014 rethink

Ferrari Engineering Director Pat Fry has admitted that the Maranello team's target this season is to finish as the best of the rest behind Mercedes.

Scuderia has started the season disappointingly despite recruiting Kimi Raikkonen to replace Felipe Massa and currently lie in fifth place on the Constructors Championship, 78 points behind Mercedes three races into the season.

As a result, Team Principal Stefano Domenicali resigned from his post earlier this week and was subsequently replaced by Marco Mattiacci.

Despite the managerial upheaval, Fry is confident that Ferrari are capable of beating the likes of Red Bull, McLaren, Force India and Williams this season.

"Currently, our first priority is to establish ourselves as the second best team," Fry told ESPN ahead of this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.

"We are looking at all areas of the car - power unit, aero, suspension. We are trying to make as big a step as we can for each and every race.

"Since the Bahrain race, it's been a very busy time for us, as we examined all areas of car performance from the power unit to suspension configurations and aerodynamic improvements.

"We are naturally working as hard as we can on closing the gap to the top teams, with Mercedes having a reasonable lead over the rest of the field. We know what we have to do. The people are pushing 100 percent, but it takes time."
