Senna was Ferrari-bound - Montezemolo

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has revealed that Ayrton Senna would have moved to Maranello had he not died at Imola in 1994.

Senna had joined Williams at the start of the 1994 season as a replacement for Alain Prost, but was involved in a fatal crash in just the third race for his new team.

"He wanted to come to Ferrari and I wanted him in the team," Montezemolo told the Ferrari website during a tribute to the Brazilian legend, who won three Drivers' Championship titles with McLaren.

Montezemolo added that he invited Senna to his Bologna home a couple of days before the race at Imola, where the Brazilian revealed that he believed Ferrari would be the best place for him to further his career.

"We spoke for a long time and he made it clear to me that he wanted to end his career at Ferrari, having come close to joining us a few years earlier," said the Italian.

"We agreed to meet again soon, so as to look at how we could overcome his contractual obligations at the time. We were both in agreement that Ferrari would be the ideal place for him to further his career."
