Pirelli boss responds to criticism

Pirelli President Marco Tronchetti Provera has responded to some of the criticism aimed at the Italian tyremaker during its time as Formula One supplier.

Pirelli re-entered F1 as sole supplier in 2013 and for most of the first year, the tyres were labeled too 'aggressive' and after the British Grand Prix - where several blow-outs occurred - a mid-season construction had to be made.

So far this year, most of the drivers have been less critical, although Fernando Alonso was once again unhappy during last week's Monaco Grand Prix.

"When they bring normal tyres with good grip, we finish the tyre in two or three laps," he told the BBC in Monaco last weekend.

"When they bring harder tyres we finish the tyre in eight or nine laps but we go very slow."

Provera, though, admitted that he was aware of the "negative comments of individual drivers".

"Basically we listen to any criticism, but our main focus especially with this new turbo era was always security," he is quoted as saying by Speed Week.

"It is definitely easier to equip just a few teams with tyres rather than the whole field, as whenever a team is not going so well, and nobody knows quite who to blame, then usually they start with the tyre manufacturer."

The Italian added that Pirelli's decision to rejoin F1 last year was ultimately a financial decision.

"We were absent from formula one for some 20 years due to the costs," he added.

"Bernie Ecclestone repeatedly asked us, but each time I answered 'If we are paid, then we come'.

"But to be honest, not until mid-2010 did it become clear that the role of the sole supplier is actually paid. So we tried and we were awarded the contract."
