Vettel: Better in the afternoon

Vettel: Better in the afternoon

After a sluggish start to their weekend, Sebastian Vettel says Red Bull made progress in Friday's second practice at the Red Bull Ring.

The double World Champion and his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo were both outside the top ten in the Friday morning session.

His efforts were also hampered by a late spin, which saw him narrowly avoid the barriers at the final corner after getting caught out on the kerb.

He did, however, take a step forward in the afternoon's session where the German finished sixth quickest on the supersoft tyres.

Vettel, though, was still 1.265s slower than the pace-setting Lewis Hamilton, who is the odds on favourite for the win.

"I think this morning we struggled a little bit too much, this afternoon was better," Vettel said.

"I think we're seeing people are struggling to get the primes, the harder tyre, to work, it should be a different story tomorrow when it is hotter. We made some progress in the afternoon.

"We are not the favourites going into this weekend, we'd love to be but we're not there yet. If anything the fact that it is our home grand prix is an extra motivation for the team."

As for that wild spin at Turn 9 in the morning, the Red Bull racer, who is losing ground in the Championship with Paddy Power to take a fifth title, said: "Obviously once I found myself in the spin I tried to do everything I could not to hit the wall, which worked."
