Button: A lot going into this year

Button: A lot going into this year

Despite conceding that McLaren won't win a race this season unless Mercedes falter, Jenson Button says his team is still pushing hard.

Having failed to repeat his Australian GP podium in the ensuing races, Button came close last time out when he brought his MP4-29 home in fourth place. He was just 0.8s behind Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

It was a much-improved showing from the British racer and came on the back of CEO Ron Dennis' urgings for the 2009 World Champion to "try harder."

But even in the face of improvements, Button says McLaren's main aim is keep moving forward race by race.

The 34-year-old told Press Association: "There's still a lot of work to do.

"The philosophy has to be 'we did all right (at Silverstone), but tomorrow has to be a better day, and the day after, and the day after that', otherwise we're not going to catch the guys at the front.

"Looking at the speed of the Mercedes I would say we're not going to win this year, not unless they both fail.

"But they are so much quicker and, to be fair, we are going to have to build a better car than they have to beat them.

"That's not going to happen, but I suppose anything is possible. We were 0.8 of a second away from a Red Bull.

"But we all know we've a lot to do. I sat down with Ron at the end of the race and he's determined to make it happen, as we all are.

"We don't want to be fourth, and happy with fourth, even though it was a great weekend for us at our home grand prix.

"So he's pushing very hard, everyone's pushing very hard. It's not like we are limited with resources either.

"There is a lot going into this year to see improvements to ensure we start next year strong."
