Mexico returns to the F1 calendar

Mexico returns to the F1 calendar

Mexico is back on the F1 calendar after a 23-year absence having signed a five-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone.

Next season the still-to-be-revamped Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City will host the grand prix.

"It is a fact," Corporacion Interamericana de Entretenimient president Alejandro Soberon revealed. "Start your engines, F1 will return to Mexico next year. This is Mexico's time."

Ahead of the grand prix, which could be held back-to-back with the Austin race, the venue will be upgraded.

Alterations to the track as well as the grandstands and the pit garages are all on the cards.

F1 supremo Ecclestone added: "After 23 years of absence, I am pleased to confirm that Formula One will be back in Mexico City in 2015.

"I feel it is the right for F1 for and Mexico and I'm sure it will be to the benefit of both for many years. I look forward to welcoming you all to this global event next year."

Formula 1 last raced in Mexico back in 1992, a race won by Nigel Mansell.
