Rosberg: The gap is surprising

Nico Rosberg was surprised by Mercedes' lead over their rivals in Hungary, believing the nature of the track would negate some of their advantage.

Lewis Hamilton and Rosberg romped away with the 1-2 in Friday's two 90-minute practice sessions.

Hamilton ended the afternoon quickest of all, clocking a 1:24.482 on the soft tyres, while Rosberg was 0.238s down.

However, worryingly for the chasing pack, Sebastian Vettel in third place was a further 0.4s off the pace.

"The gap is surprising," Rosberg said. "We thought the engine doesn't count for much at this track.

"I thought the others would be much closer, especially Red Bull. It seems like we're quick and that's great to see."

The German, who heads into Sunday's 70-lap Hungarian GP with a 14-point lead over Hamilton in the standings, added that it had been a good day out on track.

"For me it's been a very good day," he said.

"It's always a challenge here. It's like a street circuit; one corner after the other, the kerbs and the bumps.

"I was just finding my way today and in the end I was pretty pleased with the car."
