Mallya queries double points rule

Vijay Mallya has questioned the logic behind Formula 1's move to issue double points at the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP.

In a bid to make the season more exciting, the powers-that-be decided that double points would be awarded for the final race of this season.

That means a victory is worth 50 points, second is 36 points and third is 30 and on it goes.

However, given the close battle between Ferrari, Williams, Force India and McLaren, Mallya fears it could easily undo what has been a good season for any one of those teams.

At present Force India are fifth on 98 points, having lost out to Williams in recent races through the latter's spate of podium finishes.

Mallya, Force India's owner, told Autosport: "Right now Mercedes and Red Bull are somewhat way ahead - Mercedes certainly, but if you look from third to sixth in the Constructors' there's Williams, Ferrari, Force India and McLaren and we're all pretty tightly bunched up.

"There are still eight races to go, and the last one [for] double points.

"Even if we go away from Brazil in third or fourth position and say "wow! What a season!" everything could come to naught in Abu Dhabi.

"Once again I don't understand the logic of this."
