Retirement beckons for Button

Retirement beckons for Button

Jenson Button admits that he may have no option but to quit Formula One if he isn't offered a new contract by McLaren.

Earlier, McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier admitted that the uncertainty over which drivers will be contracted for the next season and beyond is "uncomfortable for the drivers", but confirmed that a driver strategy for "three years and maybe five years" is on the proverbial drawing board.

With Button's team-mate Kevin Magnussen only in his first season with the team, and a reported approach for the re-signing Fernando Alonso seemingly on the cards, Button is the likely driver to miss out on a new deal.

As a result, the Brit admitted that this season is very likely to be his last in the sport.

"We haven't sat down and talked about it," Button told the BBC at the Belgian Grand Prix.

"If I have to retire at the end of the season then so be it, but I feel I have so much more to give and I can't imagine life without motorsport and especially Formula One.

"It's unusual, yes, but sometimes it's that way. Our job is to drive as fast as we can, do the best job for ourselves and the best job for the team. I feel we are both doing the maximum we can and a very good job."
