Bahrain date change after Indian request

Bahrain GP organisers have revealed that the date of their 2012 race was changed in order to better accommodate the Indian GP.

Bahrain had been scheduled for later in the season in order to give the island kingdom more time to recover from the political unrest that resulted in their 2011 grand prix being cancelled.

However, when the 2012 calendar was ratified by the World Motor Sport Council last week, Bahrain had moved to 22 April, making it the fourth event on next year's schedule.

The race's organisers have revealed that it was changed after a request from the organisers of the Indian GP, who wanted their grand prix to be held near the end of the season.

"Following a request from the Indian Grand Prix organisers to FOM on a date change, the Bahrain International Circuit announced today that it welcomes the date switch with India to host the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix on the 22nd of April 2012," said a statement from the Bahrain organisers.

"The announcement was declared after officials from the Indian Grand Prix organiser raised some concern to FOM in hosting the race in April.

"The Bahrain International Circuit has always worked in supporting the Formula 1 family and to do what is best for the sport. We look forward to welcoming back all the teams, drivers, organisers, and fans in 2012."
