Formula One surpremo Bernie Ecclestone feels alternating races between Valencia and Barcelona "may be the way to go" if Spain wants to stay on the calendar.
The future of both the European GP on the streets of Valencia and the Spanish GP at the Circuit de Catalunya are under threat due to high costs.
Officials from Valencia have confirmed that they hope to renegotiate their deal with Ecclestone while Catalonia chiefs fear they may have to scrap the grand prix as well as their MotoGP fixtures altogether.
Ecclestone, though, says he has not yet been approached by the Valencia's authorities and also feels it may be best if the two Spanish cities alternate races.
"What's been talked about more is that Barcelona would like to alternate with them," Ecclestone told the Financial Times.
"Maybe it's a good thing. Maybe it's the way to go."
