Jenson Button has hailed McLaren's decision not to put him onto inters when a brief shower hit the Hungaroring, handing him the race victory.
The Brit was lapping in second place behind his team-mate Lewis Hamilton when the latter ran wide in a brief race shower, allowing Button to close right up.
A tense battle ensued between the two in which they exchanged the lead several times before Hamilton pitted for intermediate tyres. Button did not.
And with the move to inters proving to be the wrong call given that the shower was very, very brief, Button was left at the front of the pack to take the lead.
The victory is the 11th of his career and came at the very track where he won his first back in 2006. Added to that, it came on the day that Button marked his 200th grand prix.
"It's good having a couple weeks break because it might take me that long to get over tonight," said Button as he celebrated the win before heading off on his summer holiday.
"This is the first place I won a grand prix, in 2006 in these sorts of conditions. It's a great moment.
"For some reason I like these conditions, I don't know why.
"It was a great call by all of us not to go to the inters, and a great weekend for the team - we're going into the break on a nice high, but every day we will be thinking about Spa.
"I felt at end of first stint the win was on. I was able to look after the tyres, and the car felt really good."
Button had two separate battles with his team-mate Lewis Hamilton during the 70-lap grand prix.
The first was in the opening few laps, which was won by Hamilton, while the second started on lap 49 when Button caught his team-mate, who had slipped up in the brief shower.
The duo exchanged the lead several times, racing hard and fast but fairly. That battle ended when Hamilton erroneously pitted for inters, freeing Button up to take the lead and the victory.
"It was a lot of fun racing with Lewis - it always is," said Button.
