Button: Hopefully we'll improve

Jenson Button has every faith the McLaren that will be unleashed at this weekend's German GP can tame the Red Bulls.

Both Button and team-mate Lewis Hamilton will again put the team's performance-enhancing exhaust blown diffuser through its paces in Friday's two practice sessions.

It was a device that was ditched after Friday practice ahead of the British Grand Prix a fortnight ago due to a number of issues.

But after further time to research and develop the concept since then, there is belief the team are firmly on the right lines on this occasion.

It means there is unlikely to be a repeat of the graveyard shift that saw the mechanics work until 3am on Saturday morning at Silverstone replacing the system.

If hopes McLaren have cracked the problems turn into reality then Button and Hamilton could finally find themselves on the same playing field as title rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel.

"Everyone has done a great job of staying calm when we know we don't have the quickest car," said Button.

"We've won races, we've been competitive, we've been on the heels of the Red Bulls, so we're doing a good job.

"The car itself is a good car, it's just the Red Bulls have been moving forward at a rate of knots.

"So if we can get this update to work it will be fantastic, and I know the team has done the best it can to make sure we get the best out of it this weekend.

"Hopefully we'll see the improvement. If we don't, we'll still work with it and improve the car around it because it does take a bit of time.

"At Silverstone it's not that we were losing out, we just didn't gain as much as we expected.

"For here we'll hopefully gain the full amount of what we expected. There isn't a reason why we shouldn't."

Although Hamilton and Button lead the way in the Championship, with just 12 points separating the duo, Button feels it is imperative for their title hopes the new diffuser does its job.

"If we can get it to work we should be competitive and quick enough to really challenge the Red Bulls for victory here - and we have to," added Button.

"It is the 11th race of the year. Red Bull have obviously won more races than us, and if they are consistent they will be very difficult to beat this season.

"So this update has to be an improvement for us around here so we can challenge for the victory.

"We have to be challenging for victories at every race we go to now. We cannot just be hoping that we do a better job on the race weekend."
