Fastest laps: Hamilton leads the way

Sunday 8th April 2007

 RSS

In only his second F1 outing, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap of the Malaysian GP.

The youngster's lap of 1:36.701 was the quickest of any driver on Sunday, eclipsing the best effort of team-mate Fernando Alonso by almost two-tenths of a second.

That neither Felipe Massa nor Kimi Raikkonen were able to set a time in the 1:36s can be regarded as proof that, although the margin of McLaren's victory was aided by Brazilian's slovenly start, the Ferraris were no match for the Woking outfit in Sepang. It should be noted, too, that both Alonso and Massa set their best times on lap 42, with Massa around three-tenths of a second adrift. Raikkonen, who set his quickest time on lap 40, was slower still.

Other points of interest include Nico Rosberg's Williams being the sixth-fastest car, with team-mate Alex Wurz in between the two Renaults. At face value, then, the World Champions are currently struggling to be classified as the fourth-fastest team behind McLaren, Ferrari and BMW.

At the bottom of the charts, Anthony Davidson was comprehensively trumped by Super Aguri team-mate Takuma Sato, while neither Rubens Barrichello nor Jenson Button were able to out-pace Honda's client team.
