McLaren rookie Lewis Hamilton was disappointed not to have grabbed pole position for Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix.
In the final segment in qualifying, Hamilton was in a straight fight with Felipe Massa for the coveted grid slot, both believed to be carrying roughly the same amount of fuel.
But while Massa put in a flawless lap to post a 1:32.652 and take pole position, a few errors from Hamilton saw him finish in second place, 0.283s off the pace.
"To be honest my last lap wasn't that great - it was tough and qualifying is intense and you need to pull out absolutely everything on that last lap," he said during the post-qualifying press conference.
"In the first sector I lost a little bit of time at Turn 1, Turn 13 was a bit hectic and with the wind here it is always changing, getting cross winds and tail winds, so putting the car on the limit is quite difficult. I am looking forward to the race tomorrow."
The 22-year-old, who finished on the podium in Australia and Malaysia, is confident that he can turn his first ever front row grid slot into a strong result.
"Coming here we've had two extremely good races and we're extremely competitive where it's very close at the front," he added.
"To go into my third race in F1 and be on the front row is an amazing thing."
