Bernie and bosses meet to discuss Max

Sunday 27th April 2008

Bernie Ecclestone conducted a meeting with the sport's team bosses on Saturday, during which it is understood the future of Max Mosley was aired.

The discussions were held in the Toyota motorhome, in full view of the rest of the paddock and prying lenses of a horde of photographers.

Ten of the team principals were present, with Super Aguri the only absentees given their increasingly precarious future.

Observers noted that at one stage Ecclestone became extremely animated and appeared far from happy as the talks developed.

It has been suggested the meeting initially centred around 2009 regulations, and the development of KERS (kinetic energy recovery system), before matters turned towards Mosley.

The FIA president faces a vote of confidence on his future at an extraordinary meeting of the governing body's general assembly in Paris on June 3.

Mosley is adamant a sensational Sunday newspaper article printed at the end of March was a gross intrusion into his private life.

The 68-year-old has already launched a legal case against the newspaper, with the matter due to be heard in July.

However, Mosley's situation is becoming increasingly embarrassing for Formula One, with the majority of the headlines these days focused on motorsport's figurehead rather the sport itself.

Only on Friday, the Israeli Minister of Science, Culture and Sport, Galeb Majadle, withdrew an invitation to Mosley to visit his country to discuss the future of motorsport in the region.

After speaking to Mosley at the inaugural World Rally Championship event in Jordan, Majadle was unaware of the scandal surrounding him.

Only when his office were asked for comment were the alarm bells raised and the offer immediately withdrawn, with the matter to be reviewed more thoroughly in Israel.

Although Mosley admitted he understood the reasoning behind the decision, it is the second time in a matter of weeks he has been snubbed.

In the immediate aftermath of the Sunday tabloid revelations, the Crown Prince of Bahrain, Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, wrote a letter to Mosley asking him not to attend his country's grand prix as he felt it would be inappropriate for him to be there.

It is becoming increasingly apparent Mosley is unable to conduct his duties as befits the head of such an organisation as the FIA.

And it is seemingly why the sorry affair was raised at the team principals meeting, although no official statement was made, and none of the protagonists was willing to publicly air their views.

It is understood difficulties arose as there was not 100 per cent consensus on the issue.
