'McLaren, Merc forced to alter diffuser holes'

Four teams will have to modify their double-decker diffusers ahead of the Australian GP, after the FIA closed a loophole that the teams had exploited.

According to Autosport, McLaren, Mercedes GP and at least two other teams have been caught by the FIA's decision to put the diffuser regulations in black-and-white.

Under the 2010 regulations governing the starter motor hole in the diffuser, Article 3.12.7 states that "a single break in the surface is permitted solely to allow the minimum required access for the device referred to in Article 5.15. [supposed to refer to starter motor, although this is Article 5.16]."

However, at no time was a measurement put to the 'minimum required access' thereby allowing some teams to use unusually shaped starter motors that gave them a reason to have bigger holes in their diffusers.

The FIA, though, have now put an end to that, clarifying the dimensions for the hole.

The FIA's decision is believed to affect Championship rivals McLaren and Mercedes GP as well as two other teams, all of whom will have to made adjustments ahead of next weekend's Australian GP.
