'McLaren have the world's best drivers'

Martin Whitmarsh has heaped praise on his McLaren drivers following their 1-2 in Canada, saying they are "the two best racing drivers in the world today."

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button not only survived but flourished at a tricky Canadian GP, which saw drivers having to walk a tight line between being aggressive and taking care of their tyres.

The duo finished first and second, their second successive 1-2 result, to take the lead of the Drivers' Championship with Hamilton three points ahead of his team-mate.

"I'm told I sometimes over-use the phrase 'fantastic job' when describing the performances of Lewis and Jenson, but I make no apology whatsoever for using that phrase again," Whitmarsh said.

"This race was extremely exciting from a spectacle point of view and decidedly challenging from a strategy point of view, and I think our engineers rose to that challenge supremely well.

"But, yes, Lewis and Jenson did indeed do a fantastic job in Montreal. They drove with controlled aggression when it was needed, tempered by patience and discipline when those qualities were required."

In fact, Whitmarsh was so impressed with their performance that he hailed the two British Champions as the "best racing drivers" not only in Formula One but in the "world today."

"I firmly believe that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has the two best racing drivers in the world today," he said.

"Now, we leave North America and head back to Europe, in first place in the Constructors' World Championship, and in first place and second place in the Drivers' World Championship."

And despite the team's back-to-back 1-2s, Whitmarsh insists McLaren will not take their foot of the gas.

"We never under-estimate our competitors, who are working every bit as hard to win grands prix and World Championships as we are.

"There's a long way to go yet, but I can say without fear of contradiction that every single person at McLaren is working as hard as he or she possibly can to maintain our positions at the top of both Championship tables from here on in through to Abu Dhabi in November."
