Fernando Alonso insists Red Bull are still the favourites to take pole in Canada despite the Ferrari driver setting the pace on Friday.
Heading to Canada, Alonso had predicted a strong weekend ahead of Ferrari as the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve plays to the strengths of Ferrari's 150° Italia while masking the car's weaknesses.
And the weekend started out well for the Spaniard and his team, who topped the timesheets in Friday's practice by 0.369s ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
But despite getting off to a flying start, Alonso reckons it will be Red Bull who come to the fore on Saturday.
"It was okay," said the double World Champion.
"Obviously we tried to concentrate on the two types of tyre, the soft and the super soft tyre.
"We had a little bit of an aerodynamic programme this morning with some things to analyse on the rear wings, so we tried to complete our programme.
"We didn't concentrate on the times or whatever so it's always positive to see yourself in the first four or five positions at the end of the practice, but to be honest today is not really important.
"We also topped the practice in Monaco and then in qualifying Vettel was one second quicker than us.
"We know that tomorrow is the day to put everything and we know Red Bull will be very strong and probably the favourite, and also at the moment it's supposed to rain, especially on Sunday.
"So the job we did today maybe just for practice because everything can change tomorrow."
Friday's two practice sessions saw four accident as Vettel, Adrian Sutil, Kamui Kobayashi and Jerome D'Ambrosio all hit the wall.
And Alonso thinks there could be several more shunts to come as the weekend progresses due to the nature of the track combined with the high wearing Pirelli tyres.
"At the end of the session you put on the super soft tyre and you've done already 30 to 40 laps of the track so you try to be a little bit close to the walls to take a bit more kerb, and this is Canada - any little mistake puts you in the wall," he said.
"We see the accidents normally at the end of runs, the tyres were already a little degraded - we saw Vettel crash after a 12-lap run and these other cars were with old tyres.
"So we know the combination of Pirelli is not easy to drive when they degrade, plus the Canada circuit is a good combination - nice to watch and a bit risky for us."
