Button: Like winning a grand prix

Jenson Button says his first pole position since Monaco 2009 feels almost as good as winning a grand prix.

Qualifying has been Button's shortfall since joining McLaren with the Brit failing to shine on Saturday afternoons.

However, that changed this weekend in Belgium when the Brit posted a 1:47.573 to take his first pole position since his Championship-winning season with Brawn GP.

"It's been quite a long time since I got my last pole position - it was back in 2009 Monaco I think - so it's pretty emotional," the 32-year-old said.

"Sunday's have been good for the past couple of years but Saturdays have not gone perfectly you could say.

"A great qualifying session and it's so important to come back after just a long break with a good result on Saturday.

"I know the race is tomorrow but this is close to winning a grand prix for me because it's been so long."

Asked as to what made the difference between this Saturday afternoon and those gone by, Button said: "If I knew it would make everything great!

"But just got the balance right this morning. The car's been working well all day.

"Limited running we've all had but every run we've done has been reasonably good and we've just tickled it, especially through qualifying, and the balance is to my liking.

"I have a style that's quite difficult to find a car that works for me in qualifying but when it does we can get pole position."

The McLaren driver is now eager to turn Saturday's P1 into a victory on Sunday admitting that the 25 points are "important" if he wants to stay in the title fight.

"A lot of people ask me if I am still driving for Championship," Button said.

"It is a long shot. I am 80 points behind Fernando (Alonso), so I need to be on podium and finish ahead of him every race.

"It is not easy, but this is a good start.

"But a win is important tomorrow to fight for the Championship."
