Bianchi ends day two on top

Jules Bianchi set the pace on the final day of testing at Silverstone, which ended early when Giedo van der Garde crashed resulting in damage to a barrier.

With less than half an hour left in Wednesday's second and final day of testing, Sauber test driver van der Garde crashed his C33.

The shunt damaged not only his car but also the barrier, bringing out the red flags in much the same way Kimi Raikkonen's crash did in Sunday's British GP.

As such testing ended early with Marussia driver Bianchi on top of the timesheets. The Frenchman, though, was in a Ferrari for the day.

Drafted in to replace Raikkonen after his British shunt left him bruised, Bianchi clocked a 1:35.262 to edge Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat by just under three tenths of a second.

"I felt this was a very productive day, ticking a lot of boxes on our programme. Personally, I found it very useful and learned a lot," said the rookie driver. "The tyre management tests in the morning were particularly useful.

"Now we can look at all the data we gathered here and I think some of it could already be useful from the next race in Germany.

"It's a shame that a red flag towards the end of the session meant we didn't complete everything on our agenda, but it was still a good day."

Kevin Magnussen was third quickest for McLaren ahead of van der Garde and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. The British Grand Prix winner, who brought out the red flags in the morning when he went off at Stowe, finished his day 1.4s off the pace.

Valtteri Bottas was next in line for Williams ahead of Marussia's Max Chilton, who was another to bring out the red flags, Force India's Dani Juncadella and reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel.

The German racer, who replaced his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo for day two, covered 77 laps with a best time of 1:39.410. That was four seconds down on Bianchi's best.

The drivers who garnered the most attention on the day, though, was Charles Pic.

The Lotus test driver put the Pirelli 18-inch tyres through their paces, giving Formula 1 a peak at what the future could look like.

Julian Leal wrapped up the timesheets for Caterham on a day when "CU-H problem this morning" and the early end meant did not run Ryo Haryanto as planned.
