Fastest lap times: Kimi's quick but point-less

Sunday 28th September 2008

Kimi Raikkonen may be the fastest man in Formula One but that did little to help the Ferrari driver in Singapore.

Raikkonen clocked a 1:45.599 on lap 14 of the 61-lap grand prix, proving he has the pace when it's needed. However, it all came to nothing when the Finn put his car into the barriers just laps from the end of the race.

His team-mate Felipe Massa was the second quickest driver on the day, less than two-tenths off Raikkonen's pace. But like his team-mate, he too left Singapore without a single World Championship point after a pit-stop error ruined his Sunday afternoon.

Race winner Fernando Alonso was third quickest, which was evident as he put in a lap after lap with enough pace to ensure he was able to pit from the lead and emerge in first lap.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the two men who joined Alonso on the podium, were fourth and fifth quickest and the only other two drivers to get within a second of Raikkonen's P1 pace.

BMW's Robert Kubica, who was undone by a drive-through penalty, was sixth quickest on the day, finishing ahead of the Toyotas of Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock.

"I'd love to see alonso in a ferrari next year..."

"I wonder when people will realize that Kimi lucked to winning last year's championship because of McLaren's blunders. Four races in a row without scoring any points? A reigning world champion? In a Ferrari? Ok, his engine blew out on him in one of those races. But I don't think Schumacher will have performed this terrible. Luckily for Ferrari, the other Finn in the McLaren is no good either. They would have been trailing McLaren in the constructors standing by a bigger margin now. Being the fastest driver on the grid but do not score points is urterly useless. "

"Don't you mean: ...as he put in a lap after lap with enough pace to ensure he was able to lap from the lap and emerge in first lap? :-)"
