Heidfeld as pleased as Punch

Tuesday 7th October 2008

Nick Heidfeld admits BMW were not always satisfied with the way he was performing at times this season.

The Hinwil-based squad finally put an end to speculation that the German is on his way out by announcing an unchanged driver line-up for the 2009 season.

After getting his 2008 campaign off to a flying start, Heidfeld went through a mid-season slump, failing to make much of an impact during qualifying and getting overshadowed by his team-mate Robert Kubica.

However, the German has bounced back in recent races and has climbed to fifth in the Drivers' Championship with 56 points.

The 31-year-old is delighted with the confidence BMW have shown in him and hopes they will go on to achieve great things next season.

"I'm very pleased about this announcement and about the confidence that the team have shown in me," Heidfeld said.

"I've always said that I was happy to stay with BMW Sauber because we've managed to achieve what we set out to do at this stage and I really hope that we will be battling it out for the title itself next year.

"There have been times this season when neither I nor the team could honestly say that we were satisfied with the way things were going, but we have always pulled together and come through."

"I totally agree with Buffy's remark about the tires, let them choose....Nick has been struggling with this for the past two seasons but, hopefully when they break out the slicks everything will straighten out for good ol'Quick Nick.....he is my fave."

"I am not surprised with the BMW decision. BMW has always been supporting Nick despite his poor performances. The team spent last four months on helping Nick while Robert Kubica was left to his own devices. Recently I have talked to my friends and we have come to the conclusion that it is time Robert left BMW. They will never let him to win F1 Championship¿..as long as there is Heidfeld in the team. "

"..."Its a pity that drivers can't choose their tyres in the way that golfers choose their clubs and footballers choose their boots."... I agree. I am missing the competition between 2 tyre companies in F1. I think the rubber they race on is questionable and I am sick of the teams having to use different compounds during the race. So what? It really does not add to any racing enjoyment, it just adds to slowing the cars and stopping overtaking."
