A chastened Lewis Hamilton has admitted he made a mistake at the start of the Japanese GP - but questioned whether he deserved the same punishment as Felipe Massa for crashing into his McLaren.
Both of the World Championship rivals were handed a drive-through penalty during the race - Hamilton for out-braking himself into the first corner and effectively forcing Kimi Raikkonen off the track, Massa for then nudging the McLaren into a spin after cutting the chicane.
Looking subdued and abashed, a contrite Hamilton refused to defend his move and admitted: "I made a mistake and I paid a price for it.
"I went wide at Turn One and it was a mistake then Felipe hit me off. I went inside and he broke me left pretty hard."
However, he pointedly added: "We both got the same punishment, but I didn't hit anyone."
Massa went on to finish the race in seventh position, after a late penalty for Seb Bourdais dropped the STR driver outside the points. Massa thereby trimmed Hamilton's World Championship lead to five points.
But, according to Hamilton, the result "makes no difference" and Massa's failure to collect a substantial haul of points amounted to "damage limitation."
The 23-year-old Brit added: "What can I say, it was a bad day. I'll move on to next week."

"it is unfortunate that there arent many racers left. when you race, you give room to your opponent and if you beat him let it be in style. pushing other people off track in successive races is just unexplicable. i wish you a marry season finale like last year's lewis! you got no nerve to be a champion by your own merits."

"Hey DarkDefender, you missed the point in more than one way! First, Hamilton was punished today for forcing other drivers of the track! Try to look all the footage available on the net regarding the first corner incident and you will certainly be able to see he did not force anybody out of the track but himself. We can talk about other McLaren forcing Raikonnen of the track but not Hamilton. Applying the same verdict to the situation in Spa Hamilton was forced by Raikonnen to go off the track - other possibility was to hit him - and again Hamilton was punished for leaving the track and not Raikonnen for forcing him out. So I would say a lot of commonality, not least of which is that one side is always punished being inside or outside, defending the line or attacking the line, being half a car length in front or half a car length back. Also, Hamilton today was defending his line against Massa, was hit by Massa which effectively ruined his race and Massa received drive through while still being able to earn some points. In Spa Hamilton let Raikonnen to defend his line, went of the track, did not hit Raikonnen and destroyed his race, received 25 seconds after the race and was stripped of victory in favor of his main opponent. I do not believe you can really think these are the two same things! BTW Raikonnen did not have the lead in Spa going into the chicane. He restored his lead already being in the chicane. I am glad you see things clearly "that there's no favoritism at all going on" while at the same time being confused, and even more admire your optimistic and benevolent approach to the position of the stewards. But ask yourself, being a steward and hoping for future assignments within the FIA framework would you be tempted to satisfy your master's voice!? F1 is long ago not about what makes sense but what fulfills interests. "

"I can't believe all the bulls**t that is being spouted on this thread. Why on earth are people complaining about the way Lewis drives, claiming he is dangerous and is going to kill someone before he is done. Racing is a dangerous sport and should be won by overtaking, not by drive-throughs, retrospective penalties and incompetent stewards. I am quite neutral when it comes to F1, although I would like to see a Brit win it, and all I want to see is wheel to wheel racing, brave moves and real racers winning the championship. My wish would have been that none of these penalties were handed out. Lap 1 was a normal racing incident and happens at most races - to give a penalty to Lewis was simply pathetic. If any of you here can say that you did not find the start exciting, you should watch something like Golf! Massa spinning Lewis out - Massa did hit Lewis, and by todays rules, should have received the drive-through - but I still regard it as a racing incident and not worthy of a drive through. Bourdais penalty was utterly pathetic. It was clear that Massa made the mistake, but I say again, it was a racing incident. If drivers want to take part in a procession, then drive around the M25 (sometimes that is more entertaining than F1!) and don't bother with F1, and those who don't want to see wheel to wheel action with plenty of overtaking, go and watch the M25 from a bridge. Senna would be turning in his grave if he had seen todays race, or indeed some of the posts on here calling for the sanitation of the sport. I will finish up by saying I really hope that Lewis wins this year because he is the only one out there with balls of steel and the passion to 'give it all' to get a race victory."
