Barca Day Two: Vettel sets the pace

Tuesday 18th November 2008

Sebastian Vettel got his first outing as a Red Bull Racing driver off to a flier on Tuesday in Barcelona where he topped the timesheets.

The German, who left Toro Rosso in favour of Red Bull at the end of last season, put the RB4 through its pace, clocking a 1:19.751 around the Circuit de Catalunya..

That put him just over a quarter of a second ahead of Monday's pole sitter Takuma Sato. The Japanese driver, who is hoping to land a Toro Rosso race-seat for next year's Championship, posted a 1:20.017 to beat his rivals for the drive, Sebastien Bourdais and Sebastien Buemi. It was an impressive showing from Toro Rosso, however, their cars were fitted out to the 2008 specs and not next year's.

Fifth place went to McLaren test driver Gary Paffett, who finished just under half a second off Vettel's pace as he tried out the Woking outfit's new Kinetic Energy Recovery System.

Robert Kubica, is the rather different looking interim BMW, which features a long, flat front wing and a short, high back wing, was sixth quickest ahead of Nico Rosberg. Like Kubica he was also driving a interim car, fitted out party to next year's aero specs.

Jenson Button completed the top eight for Honda.

"Remember 1998 when the f1 cars went onto grooved tires with

a complete new aero package..Andrien Newey was the aero designer at the time at Mclaren..The maclaren1998 both with hakinen and coultard lapped the field..Adrian is at red Bull , I think we just may see a repeat of 1998.."

"This is all meaningless. Why even write an article about it? There are so many variations with the cars (this/last year aero, partial aero, tyres etc etc)that this headline and the figures have no relevance! Still, supposes it's nice to have something to read during the off-season!"
