Bernie: It's like Beckham saying no to ManU

Saturday 22nd November 2008

Bernie Ecclestone has admitted he was surprised by Michael Schumacher's confession that he turned down the Ferrari team boss role.

Earlier this month Schumacher admitted that when former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt stood down at the end of 2007 he was offered the Frenchman's job.

The seven-time World Champion, though, turned it down as it would have taken too much of his time.

However, while some will understand the German's decision, F1 supremo Ecclestone admits he was surprised.

"Let's put this into perspective," Ecclestone told the Gulf News.

"It's a bit like David Beckham turning down the chance to manage Manchester United. Amazing."

"Ecclestone enjoys being a manager, so assumes that EVERYONE should want to be a manager. Sometimes choices that seem obvious to us don't always result in happiness, Bernie. Like marrying beautiful Croatian models... "

"I always find it amazing when people question Mr Ecclestones understanding of Formula 1 and business. In the 1980s he turned the sport around. He was the leader of the movement to give the teams greater power and transformed the sport from a niche interest to a mainstream sport. "
