New qualy format up for discussion

Saturday 22nd November 2008

Formula One could introduce a new qualifying format next season after FOTA revealed a new proposition was up for discussion.

At present qualifying is divided into three parts, which the slowest five drivers being disqualified after the first two segments. The remaining ten drivers are then left to fight for pole position.

However under the new proposal, qualifying would see all the drivers out on track at the same time with the same fuel loads, with the slowest driver being disqualified until just six remain. Those six would then pit new tyres and fight for pole position.

The Formula One Teams Association have also put forward the idea of awarding a World Championship point to the pole-sitter.

FOTA will meet on December 4 to discuss the proposals.

"I think the current format is fine just the way it is. I even think qualifying on race fuel adds that little bit extra to the strategy of the race and gives the boffins a little extra brain work out. A point for pole position is a good idea, and so would a point for fastest race lap be a good idea. They do it in A1GP and it stops the whole cruising to the end of the race crap we see so often."

"ilAlfisto - maybe I'm not a smart 4-year-old. You have said that it will make qualifying more interesting. But I had already read that in the original article - you did not add any new ideas. What I want to know is HOW. Again, referring to my original comment, can someone please explain?"

"Agree with all the comments above. Difficult to say how stupid this sounds.

On the other hand, a point for pole is a very good idea. And how about restoring the point for fastest lap in the race ?"
