Webber: Total no-brainer, F1 needs Silverstone

Saturday 7th November 2009

On the day that could mark the deadline for the BRDC to sign a contract with Bernie Ecclestone, Mark Webber has insisted that Formula One must remain at Silverstone.

With plans to move the British Grand Prix to Donington Park having fallen by the wayside due to a lack of finances, the British Racing Drivers' Club are keen to ensure that the grand prix returns to Silverstone next season.

However, the BRDC and Ecclestone has failed to reach an agreement, with finances once again being sticking point.

On Thursday, the F1 supremo handed the BRDC at ultimatum, stating that they had two days to sign or Britain would lose its race.

"They say there is not much between us and them, so they should sign," he told The Guardian. "Maybe they have lost their pen but if they don't find it in the next day or two then that's it."

Two days later, though, and there has been no word on a deal being concluded, with Red Bull racer Webber urging both parties to get the contract signed.

"We have to have the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. It's a total no-brainer," he told the BBC Look East. "It's a sensational circuit. And it's always been very well attended."

"I know all the other F1 drivers love coming here. It's got that amazing feel about it in terms of the very, very quick corners. It's a challenging circuit. It's one that is back to the roots of what F1 is all about."

"Webber: Total no-brainer, F1 needs Silverstone...

No, The FIA needs to PAY Canada to hold a race here.

2005 Canadian GP was the third most-viewed sporting event of the year, Planet Wide!!!... Only behind the Superbowl, and the Champions Cup Final.

If Bernie would give the Canadian GP a fair cut of the profits, that one race draws enough viewers, (IE sponsor dollars) to support those crap races, (IE Abu Dhabi) that he can take all his $$$$ from

"brazza, i agree partially with the point you are making, but the shareholders who earn money from motorsport owe nothing to privately owned tracks!, the British government on the other hand earn roughly four billion a year from motorsport in this country!, so maybe they could find a way to cough up the money to modernise the "flagship" circuit in this country, and help protect Britain's status as the cornerstone of world motorsport!, i wonder if they will make as much as that from the Olympic games they are shoving down our throats?, making every one of us pay for it in the process, whether we want it or not!, but then strangely enough, a lot of MP's have suddenly "invested" into companies who are making shed loads of money out the games!"

"If we really need Silverstone and the teams really need the British Grand Prix then they have to contribute to the cost of updating the circuit.

This is just like football was a number years ago when the stadiums were crap and needed updating, motor racing is a wealthy sport then the stakeholders who derive a good living from it have to help modernise it and bring into the same class as other countries."
