Rosberg: I'm here to win races

Tuesday 24th November 2009

Nico Rosberg is confident his first race victory is on the horizon having signed a deal to race for Mercedes GP in 2010.

On Monday, one of the worst kept secrets in Formula One was confirmed as Mercedes held a press conference to announce Rosberg's signing.

The 24-year-old, who will be entering his fifth season in Formula One next season, is now eagerly awaiting the opportunity to grab his first race win. His best result to date was a P2 at the controversial 2008 Singapore GP.

"The aim is going to be very high for me," he told Autosport.

"I want to win races at least, and then we'll see. We need to wait a few months to see how the car turns out but I'm confident that we're going to have a strong package."

Mercedes GP have yet to announce their second driver for next year's Championship after Jenson Button opted to leave the team just months of winning the Drivers' World title.

The Brit's decision to head to McLaren has come as a surprise to many in the paddock, including Rosberg.

"It was never certain (that Button would stay)," he said. "There was a high chance that it was going to be and now it has turned out not to be. That's just how it went.

"I wasn't that involved with what was going on so it was a little bit of a surprise, but not too much."

Asked whether he believed Button or Lewis Hamilton would have the edge next season, Rosberg diplomatically stated that it is too early to pick between the current and past World Champs.

"That's difficult to say. We'll see next year when they are up against each other. I'm not sure," he said.

"I raced against Lewis, so I can say for sure that Lewis is a great driver and Jenson is a bit more difficult for me to judge but he is certainly a fantastic driver."

Button's move to McLaren has left Merc GP without a second driver for 2010, however, reports in the media claim Michael Schumacher could make a comeback. That, though, is a topic Rosberg isn't willing to get draw in to.

"I don't want to comment on that, sorry," he said.

As for speculation that Mercedes could sign an all-German line-up, he said: "I don't really mind who my team-mate is. It's just important that he fits well into the group so that we can attack together for Mercedes GP."

" Storm 2006 Rosberg signed to race for Williams. He has always performed to the limit of the car. Brawn will build a good car and Mercedes will give him the money to keep up the development pace. Rosberg would have won the championship easily in this years Brawn."

Daveco

"One year if he is lucky, winning racesLOL he could not even exit the pits while leading a race. He is not good enough to be at a team like Brawn. I hope I have to admitt I was wrong, but I doubt that will be"

hcr75

"Can never be sure, but the safest bets tend to be a ferrari and mclaren fighting it out in the front.

Redbull and merc(brawn) will continue to be strong players, but can they dominate again? May be Williams..

Not sure of renault this year. i am sure they are too distracted right now to produce a champion car

But we will get some indications with the 1st round of tests."

"kimi will join him?"
