Fernando Alonso's Spanish GP may have come to a smokey - and premature end - but the former World Champion remains hopeful that the weekend was the start of a renaissance for the Renault team.
Alonso delighted the partisan Barcelona crowd by qualifying in second place for the race, and while he appeared to be heading for no better than fifth position before his engine blew up, the Spaniard was delighted with the improved performance overall.
"The end was not what you want in front of your home crowd but I am happy," Fernando told ITV. "Felipe Massa pitted two laps before me which shows how good our qualifying performance was.
"We were close to BMWs so I can enjoy races again," he continued. "We will keep working, we have found a good direction to go and hopefully, Step by step, we can get there."
