BMW are fast closing the gap to Ferrari having already overtaken McLaren, that's according to BMW driver Nick Heidfeld.
BMW finished behind only Ferrari in Sunday's Bahrain GP, with Robert Kubica claiming third place and Heidfeld fourth, both coming home within ten seconds of Felipe Massa's winning time.
It was a notable achievement for the German outfit, who dogged Ferrari throughout the 57-lap race and beat McLaren's best-placed driver Heikki Kovalainen by roughly 20 seconds.
"We were faster than McLaren Mercedes," Heidfeld told his website. "Only the Ferraris were superior to us, but also they are within reach."
And the German is hoping to further close the gap next week's three-day test at Barcelona. "I am also pretty sure that during the next three weeks our teams in Hinwil and Munich will continue to improve our car," he said.
Heidfeld's also happy with BMW's position in the standing, which sees the team leading Constructors' battle by one over Ferrari with McLaren a further point adrift.
He said: "I am second in the drivers standings now and I am really proud that my team is leading the Constructors' Championship."
